Pay Range: $35.81 - $46.40 per hour

The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Job Overview: 

The Histologist processes, accessions, cuts, embeds, and stains tissue specimens for review and diagnosis by the Pathologist. Cytology specimens, including fluids, washing and brushings are also processed by the Histologist for review and diagnosis by the Pathologist. 

Qualifications: 

Required: 

Education: 
AS degree 
Experience: 
Prefer 2-3 years of previous experience in a hospital environment 
Certification/Licensure: 
Histology certification 

Essential Functions: 

• Processes surgical specimens, cutting, tissues and providing high quality slides to the pathologist in a timely manner. 

• Picks up specimens from the OR. 

• Accessions specimens. 

• Processes, embeds and labels tissue samples. Gives priority to specimens as directed by the pathologist. 

• Stains, routine, special stains and immunohistochemistry. 

• Performs other procedures as directed with acceptable turn around times. 

• Prepares solutions for instruments and staining, changes solutions according to schedule and washed staining dishes. Maintains solutions in the Frozen section room. 

• Maintains laboratory equipment, troubleshoots problems, resolves or escalates to supervisor for resolution. 

• Files slides and paraffin blocks daily. 

• Performs weekly inventory. 

• Performs quality control, resolves out of control discrepancies, and documents corrective actions. 

• Prepares cytology slides, stains and cover slips. 

• Completes appropriate billing for all test performed. 

• Disposes of specimens according to laboratory guidelines and state regulations.
